Who is eligible to live in the apartments?
Current on-campus freshmen students and current off-campus freshmen (who have attended one of the mandatory Poly Canyon Village Info Sessions provided by Residential Life and Education) have first opportunity to apply into the Poly Canyon Village Apartment lottery. Any unfilled spaces will be made available to current Cal Poly students from an interest list. Can upperclassmen live in Poly Canyon Village Apartments?
Upperclass students (sophomore & higher) wanting to live on campus for the upcoming year will be able to place their name on an "Interest List" after the initial lottery process has been completed for current freshmen. Beginning Friday February 27,2009, any current continuing Cal Poly student can place their name on the Poly Canyon Village Apartment Interest List for an apartment space through the Cal Poly portal (my.calpoly.edu), using their Cal Poly portal user name and password then selecting the "Housing" tab, and clicking the "Log In" button to access the "Housing Application System."

What about computer connectivity in the apartments?
Each bedroom has direct, high-speed internet access for each student (Ethernet) to the Cal Poly Computer Network and the Internet at no additional charge. There is also one port located in the common living area. Wireless (for computers) will be in exterior courtyards of each building. To protect the on-campus computing network, residents will be required to login and go through a mandatory ResNet pre-check procedure before gaining web access. Why should I live on-campus instead of off-campus?

Will I be able to stay in my apartment during winter break?
At this time, students needing to stay over Winter Break will need to be housed in the Cerro Vista Apartments.
What about laundry facilities?
There are eight laundry rooms throughout the complex. Washers ($1.00) and dryers ($.75) are available for the use of Poly Canyon Village Apartment residents only. Ironing boards are available in each laundry room. Students need to bring their own iron.
Students living in Poly Canyon Village are not required to purchase a meal plan. However, there are over twenty on-campus restaurants and food venues available to all Cal Poly students with at least one food operation open every day. There is a wide variety of fare that is vegetarian, non-dairy, wheat/gluten-free, low-fat, and more to accommodate various food preferences and allergies. Fresh foods are brought in from local and regional producers to develop healthy and delicious menu items. Restaurants located in the Poly Canyon Village Plaza include "Jamba Juice", "Einstein Bros. Bagels" and "Peet's Coffee and Tea" as well as the "Village Market." For more information on optional meal plans on the Campus Express card visit Campus Dining.
Parking for Poly Canyon Village residents is available, with an R3 parking permit, in the Residential Parking Structure Lots #271 and #371 which are adjacent to the apartment complex.
How much does it cost to live in the apartments?
See Housing Fees for cost and payment due dates. (Cost for the 2009-2010 Academic Year equates to approximately $730.00 per month for a private bedroom and $570.00 per month for a shared bedroom)) *Prices subject to change and Executive Order approval.

What is the length of the contract/license agreement?
The "Poly Canyon Village Apartment Student Housing License Agreement" is an academic year contract (September through June). If a student moves into their apartment mid-year, his/her contract will expire at the end of Spring Quarter. Please see the "Poly Canyon Village Terms & Conditions" for cancellation standards.
Can I request my apartment roommates?
Yes, applicants can request roommates but the requests must be mutual and of the same sex.
How and when can I see a Poly Canyon Village apartment?
Tours of the Poly Canyon Village community buildings and apartments are available during Cal Poly's Open House and Spring Break Weeks. Tours are also available in January of each year for freshmen residents applying for next year's lottery process. You can also view our Gallery of images.
How big is each apartment and bedroom?
The apartments are approximately 936 - 1175 square feet featuring 4 floorplans. Private bedrooms are 103 - 112 square feet; shared bedrooms are 165 square feet. Private bedrooms have one window, and shared bedrooms have 2 windows.
Do the apartment doors open into a corridor?
All apartment front doors open into a common interior corridor.
What is the lock system for my apartment?
Entry into each apartment is with a separate card lock with individual pin numbers. Each bedroom has a key lock.
How many bathrooms in an apartment?
There are two bathrooms per apartment each having a full tub/shower unit. ADA apartments have a tub/shower unit in one bathroom and a wheelchair roll-in ADA compliant shower in the second bathroom.
What appliances will be provided?
Each apartment has an electric oven/ range, refrigerator-freezer, and a microwave oven.
What kind of window treatment will the apartments have?
Common living areas have drapes. Bedrooms have mini blinds.
Students may bring some additional furnishings, however, keep in mind, the original furnishings must remain in the apartment. Students may bring free-standing storage units, or bookcases, but because of safety concerns, they cannot exceed 48" in height. Due to space constraints in the apartments, it is recommended that students not bring additional personal furniture such as couches/sofas. Can I bring a TV, Stereo, or VCR?
Students can bring any of the above or decide among roommates who will bring which of the items to share. Please note that large stereo speakers are not allowed in the apartments. In each living room, there is a wall mounted bracket for a small flat screen TV with a cable TV outlet that can hold up to 75 lbs. Each bedroom also has a cable TV outlet.
If I am 21 years old, can I have alcohol in my room?
Poly Canyon Village is designed to house Sophomore students. If a student is under 21 years old, no alcohol is allowed, all State Laws apply. Being under the influence of alcohol is not allowed. Containers that originally contained alcohol are not allowed. For more detailed information, please refer to the Poly Canyon Village Apartment Handbook.
Is smoking allowed in the Poly Canyon Village Apartments?
Governor's Order EO599 prohibits smoking in any university building. Smoking is also prohibited within 20 feet of a building. This policy applies to all residents, guests, and visitors.

Yes, the Apartments are staffed with live-in professional staff members (Coordinators of Student Development) and student Resident/Community Advisors.
What types of measures are taken to protect my safety?
Safety of our residents is our highest priority. Cal Poly's residence halls and apartments are locked 24/7. Access into each hall and apartment is by residents using their keys.
Resident and Community Advisors are available to students, conduct rounds three to four times a night and make sure exterior doors are secured.
A Coordinator of Student Development is assigned to each hall, is a full-time, live-in professional who is able to respond to emergencies if they occur, and alert the community if anything suspicious occurs.
A University Police Officer works cooperatively with residence hall staff to provide residents with safety information, community response, and ongoing resources for public safety awareness.
Courtesy phones are placed outside Sierra Madre, Yosemite, and each South Mountain Hall. These allow residents to call friends within a hall or contact Pubic Safety Services in case of emergency. We call upon our residents to participate in a partnership with the University Housing Department in creating a safer community.

What if I have an emergency?
Dial 9-1-1 in any emergency:
- Dialing 9-1-1 on any campus phone connects you directly to University Police.
- Dialing 9-1-1 on a cell phone connects you to the California Highway Patrol who will then transfer the call to a University Police Dispatcher.
- "Blue Light" emergency phones, located throughout campus, also connect to University Police via the 9-1-1 system.

Medical Emergency
University Police Dispatchers are certified in the use of the Emergency Medical Dispatch Protocol , certified in the use of First Aid and CPR , and certified in the use of Automatic External Defibrillators Emergency Medical Technicians and/or Paramedics will also respond to care for the patient as well.
Where is the closest police department?
The University Police Department is located on campus. It is a full service police agency, which is certified by the California Department of Justice and includes officers and staff with a broad range of both sworn and civilian responsibilities. University Police provides emergency response, investigative services, crime prevention services, uniformed police patrol as well as a 9-1-1 communications center which provides Emergency Medical Dispatch. Officers are empowered to enforce the regulations of the university, the laws of the local community and the laws of the state and federal government. Where do I go in the event of a campus wide emergency?
Outdoor assembly areas, emergency blue phones, wheelchair evacuation chairs and car-less pickup areas have been set up around campus. See Emergency Maps for details.

Does Cal Poly have plans in the case of a major emergency?
In the event of a major emergency, one in which the campus cannot operate normally, the Emergency Management Plan will be activated and emergency activities will be coordinated from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

Will I be able to live in the Poly Canyon Village Apartments for Summer Quarter?
Summer housing for continuing students is held in the Cerro Vista Apartments. Current students will need to apply online for summer housing and will be assigned to a summer apartment in the Cerro Vista Apartments.

Will there be a phone provided in the apartment?
Yes, there is one analog phone provided per apartment which is installed in the common living area. Phone jacks are provided in each bedroom sharing the main apartment phone number. Residents may bring a phone for their own rooms. Voice mail is not part of the phone service, so apartment mates may want to decide among themselves who will bring an answering machine.
